Review of the Film 'Saltburn', Scholarship Students' Obsession with Rich Children

 The film 'Saltburn' is the latest work from the hands of Emerald Fennel. He now sits as writer and director after producing Promising Young Woman in 2020.


Saltburn begins the story of Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan) who is an Oxford student on a scholarship. His personality is described as a quiet student and has difficulty getting along with new environments.

However, Oliver's attention turns to a popular and wealthy student named Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi). Oliver felt like entering Felix's world.

As a result of an unfortunate incident, Oliver managed to enter Felix's circle of friends. In fact, it could be said that Felix was the one who "took care of" Oliver after hearing the tragic story of his new friend.

Felix invited Oliver to stay temporarily at his house in the Saltburn area. Oliver also met the residents of Saltburn, such as James (Richard E. Grant), Elspeth Catton (Rosamund Pike), Venetia Catton (Alison Oliver), Farleigh Start (Archie Madekwe), and Pamela (Carey Mulligan).

Initially the audience will not realize the storyline that Fennel is trying to present. However, all this confusion begins to be answered through Oliver's actions which are slowly revealed.

Choosing Barry Keoghan as Oliver is the right step in presenting the character of a crazy guy covered in a natural, innocent face.

On the other hand, the authorship and shooting aspects were successfully combined with the actors' acting skills which made the audience feel "disgusted" watching a series of scenes that appeared.

This madness continues by bringing Keoghan together with Jacob Elordi, who is described as a perfect figure who represents the image of social men and playboys in the United States.

One thing that is quite highlighted is the lack of Fennel in ending the film Saltburn. Oliver's explanation at the end of the film actually feels long-winded because all of these things have been described by Oliver throughout the film.

Apart from that, the ending presented is also less prominent and only gives an impression in the minds of the audience about Oliver Quick's actions as a crazy guy who is full of obsession and a psychopath with a lot of disgusting actions.
